Tell us about your journey to SMU’s Business Management programme.
My internship with ICA’s Corporate Communications team after my A-Levels sparked my interest in strategy and communications. Encouraged by my brother, who has a background in banking and finance and is pursuing a degree in accountancy, I applied to SMU’s Business Management programme. The flexibility to declare my major later allowed me the time to discover my passions.
At SMU, after researching various majors, consulting seniors, and evaluating career opportunities, I chose to major in Communication Management. Its Data, Design, and Communications track appealed to me as it aligns with my interests in user interface/user experience (UI/UX), product management, and the growing artificial intelligence sector.

You recently completed the SMU Business Study Mission (BSM) to New York, a course which examines the business environment and available opportunities in the city. How was your experience?
The BSM stood out to me because of its focus on generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) and its impact on the creative industry, aligning with my interests in Technology, Data, and Design. Additionally, it was also my first time in the United States and provided me an opportunity to broaden my worldview.
We had the privilege of visiting industry leaders, including advertising agencies like Mother and Havas, broadcasting giants such as Warner Bros. Discovery and NBC, and institutions like NYU Tisch School of the Arts and The Broadway League. These visits were incredibly enriching, offering insights into how Gen AI presents both opportunities and challenges across creative sectors. I was especially inspired by the speakers, who encouraged us to embrace uncertainty, seize opportunities, and build careers at the intersection of our strengths and passions.
Overall, it was an invaluable experience that not only aligned with my career aspirations but reinforced my interest in creativity and technology.

Community service has been a big part of your university life. What motivates you to give back, and how do you hope to continue nurturing this passion?
Coming from a financially disadvantaged background and having received financial aid to pursue my education, I feel a deep sense of responsibility to give back. I hope to inspire others in similar circumstances to strive for excellence despite their challenges.
Recognising the power of education in leveling the playing field for those from lower-income households, I began volunteering as a primary school tutor before university. The chance to guide and encourage these students was deeply rewarding and strengthened my belief in the transformative value of education and mentorship. I also volunteered with the elderly through Project Inspira and Project SilverLight, where we empowered seniors to lead more active lifestyles and built meaningful connections with them.
Although my volunteering efforts are currently on hold due to academic and internship commitments, I plan to resume this work once I settle into my full-time career.

You’ve held leadership roles in SMU Broadcast & Entertainment and SMU Arts & Culture Fraternity. How have these experiences contributed to your personal growth and skill development?
My interest in public speaking led me to SMU Broadcast & Entertainment, where a senior encouraged me to audition. I was accepted into the Campus Emcee Collective Wing, receiving training by industry professionals and hosting various events. These experiences not only strengthened my confidence and communication skills but also expanded my social network, leading to a role as a student assistant at SMU’s Office of Advancement.
Eager to grow and to build meaningful connections, I ran for a leadership role and was honoured to be elected vice-president in my first year. This experience gave me hands-on exposure in stakeholder management and public communications while strengthening my time management – skills I believe are highly relevant in the professional world.
Looking to further expand my horizons, I successfully campaigned for vice-president of SMU Arts & Cultural Fraternity. In this role, I focused on member relations and learnt to navigate difficult conversations with confidence and empathy - an area of personal growth that I deeply value.
